This interactive session will explore microagressions and allow participants to develop tools to become Allies. Microagressions can be defined as everyday slights, snubs, or insults that communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative messages based on an individual belonging to a marginalized group. We will review and discuss the different types of microagressions (microassaults, microinsults, and microinvalidations). In developing awareness around microagressions, individuals can start to become a Allies.
Allies seek to understand their own privilege and use their power to take action on behalf of others. We will review the concept of Allyship in the workplace, and discuss how participants can become allies in their own work environments.
